Leg ulcers are often caused by underlying venous reflux disease. Although traditionally thought to be a sign of deep venous problems it is now accepted that the majority of venous leg ulcers are caused by superficial venous reflux and therefore treatable in the same way as varicose veins.
As there are other causes of leg ulcers it is important that a full vascular assessment is undertaken including an arterial assessment and a venous duplex scan.
It is best if vein treatment is not undertaken until the ulcer has been healed using a suitable compression regime. The Lincoln Vein Clinic works closely with the Lincoln Leg Clinic. Lindsay Hunter is a very experienced leg ulcer nurse and you may prefer to see her first to get the ulcer healed prior to a consultation with us.
